My Friend, the Phoenix

I saw him flying
higher and higher
through the clouds,
unable to control
velocity or stop before
he hit the atmosphere
and burned.

I watched his feathers
singe and turn to ash
that fell like rain;
I couldn’t look away
but choked instead
on memories.

Tears left streaks
of grey in darker grey,
rolling down my cheek
and to the ground
where they rose up
with wings to fly.

  1. Very nice folding-in of concept.

Also, in general, I love reading about mythic creatures.

    1. Thanks, Jack. I do too. Especially those misunderstood.

  2. If tears could fly Ben, I would be surrounded by flocks of birds. So dense they would block out the sky. It's a beautiful concept. Nicely put.

    1. Woah. I'm listening too. Maybe if they made my poem into a feature length film it could be the soundtrack!
