Race to Erase

Joy ran off fifteen pounds,
It wasn’t good enough.
Her washboard, six-pack
Went down to perfect hips
And chiseled legs.
It wasn’t good enough.

She thought of nothing but her health,
Shed pounds in her relationships.
It wasn’t good enough.
Blood ran through the body
To the heart; diastolic near impeccable.
It wasn’t good enough.

She stopped studying; figured
That a brain of seven pounds
Just weighed her down.
It wasn’t good enough.
Others saw her flawless bod
And gaped but couldn’t for the
Life of them recall her name
Or who she was.  And neither could she.
It wasn’t good enough.

  1. Man, that's sad, Ben, she's disappearing! I've known many women like that, who are trying to achieve a body that is in reality a photoshopped, air-brushed pic in a magazine. They need to STOP DOING THAT and show real women.

And I quit donating to the "Race for the Cure" ever since I read they spend $900,000 a year on suing people who use the line 'for the cure'. What a waste of money that SHOULD be used for breast cancer research!! Okay, I'm hopping off my little soap box now. :-) xo

  2. Sue you say? Think I'll change the title :p Wow, that's ridiculous!

But definitely, real women all the way!

  3. No wonder Marion wants you all to herself Ben! Any man who advocates for the real curves of real women is worth his weight in gold! Love the poem. All too true. Our beauty should be primarily in WHO we are, not the shell we come in.

  4. Shake the shell and hear the ocean within :)

  5. Funny, I don't know if you know the rapper Lecrae, but he has a song called "Identity," that reminds me of this song.

I do think an equilibrium must be maintained though. For the longest time I used stuff like this to justify my unhealthy lifestyle. Like, "What?! I'm curvy! I'm a 'real woman.' Why should I be stick skinny?" But then I realized that I was just making excuses. Since then I've been working out more and eating less, and it's been good. I agree it can become an obsession like, "omg my brain weighs too much." I just think we need to also show that there are real dangers in being overweight.

hahahaha...Even though I just went on a roll just then, I really DO like this poem! Great job...again! :-)
